The Club was officially born on the 13th June 1931 as an opportunity for the old boys of Reeds School, Cobham to stay in touch playing a game they all loved. Initially, there was no Clubhouse, conditions were sparse, a barn full of hay was the changing room, zinc baths (filled infrequently) removed the mud.
In l933, a seven year lease was acquired on a plot of land in Northolt. Money was extracted, donated and earned, hours of work were put in by players and supporters and the result was a ground and pavilion that was in use by the start of the 1933/4 season. By l938, three teams were being fielded each week and the future looked promising.
However, that summer, the pavilion was burned down and with the outbreak of war; all rugby matters were temporarily shelved.
After the War
In 1946, the School moved to Cobham and the Club was reformed. The Governors of Reeds School kindly agreed to give us a pitch and space for a Clubhouse in the school grounds.
Clubhouse number two was built by the members and opened in 1952.
On the move again
However, by the late 1960’s, the School was expanding and needed the land that the Old Boys were using. In 1971, we were on the move again and under the guidance of John Rogers and John Laidman the players and members set about the construction of Clubhouse number three at Whiteley Village. The new building was opened in 1972 and celebrated by a match between the Club and Surrey County Clubs. In 1979/80, Bob Potter captained the 1st XV to an unbeaten season.
On Tour
In 1981, to commemorate the Club’s 50th Anniversary, some 45 members embarked on a memorable tour to Texas and Louisiana. In 1988, the Old Reedonians ventured off on their travels again, this time to Canada, and in 1990/91 - the Club’s 60th Anniversary they toured the Southern States of America.
Modern times
In the mid 1990’s three members Simon Bailey, Jes Isaacs and Adrian Ricks decided to form the Mini section in order to give their children an opportunity to play rugby. Over the years the Mini’s has become a real success story with over 400 boys and girls playing rugby every Sunday throughout the season. The success of the Mini’s has led to the formation of a thriving Youth section. The 2009/10 season will see 190 boys from the U13 to U16 age groups all playing Division 1 league rugby – a truly remarkable achievement.
Ironically, as the Mini and Youth sections have been growing the last 15 years has seen a decline in the Senior Section from regularly putting out 4 sides to now just the one. 2009 will mark a big recruitment drive to ensure that the Youth boys have a Senior club to play for.
