SURREY LEAGUE FOUR
EGHAM 38 pts REEDS WEYBRIDGE 10 pts
Reeds still looking for their first win met up with a strong Egham contingent last Saturday. Reeds probably had the heavier pack which certainly had the better of the tight scrums, Tozier the veteran hooker saw to that, and he contributed equally with his accurate lineout throwing and strength in the loose. But in those loose exchanges Reeds struggled against the younger and quicker Egham outfit, when they sucked in the Reeds defence then fired the ball out wide, Reeds just couldn’t get the players across to the contact point quickly enough. That was really the difference between the two sides with Reeds in a mainly defensive posture for most of the first half with occasional break outs from the powerful running of Addison Gelpie the winger and the clever footwork of centre Jonathan Satterley. But at half time Reeds were three tries adrift to a single penalty, a good one at that, from way out by scrum half Chandos Munro, it was a great kick but it was his fearsome tackling that was on show, he saved some desperate situations. Shortly after the restart Reeds were back in the game following fly half Tom Stanley’s chip through from just 15 metres out, the ball bobbled, Stanley saw his chance and dived on to the ball, it was a try under the sticks. But the pace of the Egham side was always a threat, in the dry conditions, quality off loads in the tackle created space and opportunity. But it was in those circumstances that Reeds defence had some great moments, Jonathan Bower the grizzled No 8 and Toby Conway-Hughes the flanker and Reeds skipper were a huge asset in the loose, preventing the quick ball getting out to the Egham backs. It was another three tries at the end, but Reeds had stuck in a notably physical response to a strong attacking side, they will be pleased with that.
