Jeremy Wastie takes over from “Hitch” as our head coach for the 2009/10 season.
Jeremy played rugby throughout his school, college and army career as an enthusiastic if somewhat lightweight (but mobile...) wing forward or hooker. Jeremy has been involved with Reeds minis for the past 8 years. Having seen his eldest son Toby through the Minis into Youth rugby, Jeremy is now really enjoying helping his second son Joseph and the rest of the now U11s improve and develop their own skills and enjoyment of the game.
Jeremy says: “Our aims for the 2009/10 season are to build on the skills and experience that the boys already have. We have to come to terms with bigger scrums and the introduction of kicking as part of general play, but we also want to improve on our results from last season and our emphasis will be on increasing the pace of our play and instilling the importance of team work - 12 on the pitch playing as a team are always going to beat 12 individuals.
Whilst striving for silverware and a position in the top quartile of Surrey Teams at all levels this season, our primary objective remains seeing the kids expand their rugby knowledge and skills but above all to enjoy themselves and develop as individuals.
We are blessed with a particularly strong band of coaches and helpers in the U11s, and a core membership of well over 40 players, but we are always very keen for more, especially with an eye to the 15 man game looming in the next 2 seasons. So we look forward to seeing you at Whiteley village for the new season and please pass on the word to any friends or acquaintances that would be interested in joining us."
All of the coaches have kids in the age group. We are a friendly and inclusive group and meet to discuss and plan training sessions at the Jolly Farmer in Weybridge through the season on first and third Thursdays of the month. We will always welcome new players to the age group so if you are interested then give us a try!
We want to keep 3 squads running and the fixture list is busy as usual with many tournaments including our own Reeds C festival and, new this year and for the first time, a Reeds A festival.

We currently have a core of around 40 children training regularly on a Sunday morning. Last season saw 10 new players join the age group. Every member of our squad will represent the club in tournaments at A, B or C level and some of the new players quickly progressed to playing in the A, B and C squads.
We retained the vast majority of players during the transition from tag to contact rugby in great part due to progressive coaching. Mini Rugby folklore is that there is a high drop out rate!
The boys and girls come from at least 12 different local schools and the majority of them have been with us from the Under 5’s. It is a pleasure to see them develop not only as rugby players but also as young people.
As an age-group and as a club we pride ourselves not only on the style of rugby that we play but also the spirit in which we play. As coaches we strive to provide an environment in which the children can learn safely the core techniques of the game whilst having fun. We have moved away from the old school drill based style of training, where you would have to do 20 press-ups every time the ball was dropped and instead focus on a game based approach. By playing lots of games we can coach rugby in a competitive, realistic and most importantly fun way. We make very welcome any new players who would like to come down to training and develop their skills as rugby players.

5. Finally, THANK YOU very much to everybody for all their support. It has been a very busy, but great fun season and I think we have achieved our objective of improving the rugby of ALL the children and giving them lots of enjoyment in the great game along the way. Remember over the summer, keep feeding them up, keep fit and healthy and get them to tell all their mates what a great club we have and to get them to come on down!
Have a great summer!!
Jerry and the Coaches
A quick note to update all and pay a really big tribute to the U11s A Squad who did so well at the Surrey A’s.
We started in a pool with Effingham & Leatherhead and Cobham (last year's U10s winners). We have played both this season before, drawing with E&L twice and losing to Cobham at least once, so we had our work cut out.
First up were E&L and we simply played the best rugby we have played all season. Connor Munro stormed up the pitch in the opening minutes supported by Buffy and Oli K touches down. Joe W converts. E&L never recovered and we went on to play real champagne rugby. Next try, Finn goes blind and links up beautifully with Charlie N who hits the ball at pace to score our second. Joe Converts. Finally in the best move of the game, we run the ball out wide with Oli H hitting the line from full back, linking with Ryan and Charlie N scores again. Joe converts. We could have scored again after fantastic forward pressure on their line, but we could not quite convert. So we win 21-0.
Next is Cobham who have some very big and talented players with a very well drilled and aggressive pack. So we were up against it and although the boys played with spirit they ran through us in the first half and scored 2 tries. In the second half we were better and started to contest. Cobham scored again, but we were playing with more confidence. We took a quick penalty and Buffy storms over to get us one back which Charlie converts. But Cobham score one more and we lose 28-7.
That puts us in the Plate competition and after a very long wait we get to play Haslemere in the Quarter Finals. They are an unknown squad to us, having not met them all season and they have some big lads in the forwards. It is a close game all the way through. We met their physical challenge head on with fantastic aggressive tackling by all but especially Cameron, Finn, Charlie P and Charlie N and Oli H. They did manage to score in the first half to lead one try to nil, but we did not let heads go down and played with tremendous spirit and ambition in the second half. The reward came when Charlie P made a fantastic interception and scored. Charlie N converts. The last 3 minutes were spent camped on the Haslmere line but despite wave after wave of attacking we just could not breech their defensive line. Draw 7-7. The unfairest bit is the "conversion" shoot out at the end and Joe very unluckily missed a kick he would have made 9 time out of 10....
So technically we are out, but I think we can take it that we made it to the semis of the plate which puts us around mid table in the 24 clubs represented at the Surrey As. Not bad at all.
I am sure that all the coaches and parents will join me in paying tribute to our squad. The standard of rugby was extremely high, the pitches were like concrete and our kids played some of the best rugby of the season with massive passion. We were short in the forwards and many thanks to Oli M-R and James Wyeth for volunteering to attend at zero notice from the Development squad. Well done too to Max Vargo and Ian Gobron for acquitting themselves very well in the cauldron of top level rugby. We really did show the rewards of all the hard work yesterday - the forwards played with real aggression and the back line really delivered on the potential they have shown all year. But probably the best element was the teamwork that they showed and the maturity in getting themselves organised on the pitch. We go into the U12s season with great confidence.
